When Joy Finds You Anyway: A Story About Friendship, Faith, and Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter Tour
I wasn’t going to see The Cowboy Carter show.
Not because I didn’t want to. Not because I don’t adore Beyoncé.
This is my fourth Beyoncé concert. I’ve seen her live before. I know what it feels like to be in the same space as her presence, her power, her performance. So when I say I wasn’t going this time, it wasn’t because I didn’t care.
It just wasn’t a priority.
I’ve been in a season where planned joy has taken a backseat to survival. Life has been FULL...of fire claims, temporary housing, insurance negotiations, building my business, raising my kids, and trying to keep my peace intact while rebuilding every corner of my life from scratch. So when the Cowboy Carter tour was announced, I didn’t even try for presale tickets. I didn’t plan. I didn’t budget for it. I just let it go, knowing that I was GOING TO BE READY FOR ACT III.
Then Memorial Day happened.
I woke up to two tickets sitting in my text messages. No warning. No hint. Just love, from one of my best friends, Corrina. She had gone to see the show in New York that weekend. I remember seeing the photos in our group chat and saying, "Dang... I really hate that I'm gonna miss it this time."
Apparently, God (and Corrina) had other plans.
What hit me the hardest wasn’t just the generosity of the gift...it was the reminder. That even in seasons where I don’t have the capacity to prioritize joy, joy can still prioritize me.
I literally cried opening that text. Because in that moment, I remembered that I’m still allowed to receive. That blessings don’t require hustling. That sometimes grace just shows up without permission, without a plan.
So I bought me some new boots, got my outfit together, gassed up, and made space for joy to take the front seat again.
And let me tell you: it was worth every mile.
The show was beyond. The music, the message, the energy in the room—it reminded me of who I am. Of who I’m still becoming. And of why making room for joy in the middle of your rebuild is not just a luxury. It’s necessary.
